Policy Recommendations for Integrating Resilience into the Management of Cultural Landscapes

Abstract: The perspectives of resilience and cultural landscape share common interests in planning, managing, and protecting socio-ecological systems. Although the principles of the Yokohama, Hyogo, and Sendai frameworks may be used in a variety of geographical contexts due to their general design, the implementation of these frameworks in cultural landscapes is seldom discussed. Our theoretical research is the first step in an ongoing effort to explore how urban governance and policy may provide room for enhancing cult… Show more

“…According to Seeliger and Turok [23], sustainability is a crucial aspect of disaster preparedness because natural disasters have profound effects on the environment, social systems, and economic structures. By incorporating sustainability into disaster preparedness planning, communities can better mitigate the environmental effects of disasters and create more resilient systems that can withstand their effects [24]. According to the United Nations for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), for the 2030 agenda for sustainable development to be realized, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be incorporated into the policy and practice of local governments worldwide [20].…”

“…(International Transport Forum, 2020). However, these cities require a unique conservation framework that enhances the resilience of the city (Shirvani Dastgerdi & Kheyroddin, 2022) to both emerging risks (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic) and STTA issues.…”

“…According to recent studies, historical sites must be prepared to respond to risks that disrupt their operations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic (Shirvani Dastgerdi & Kheyroddin, 2022). As a result, the purpose of this study is to explain how the rapid increase in STTA in some ancient Italian cities may be considered a risk that may make WHS more vulnerable to new COVID-19 variations in post-pandemic time.…”

“…A similar strategy has been discussed by Dastgerdi, who explored the way urban governance and policy provide room for enhancing cultural landscape resilience against natural hazards. They discovered cultural landscapes require a bottom-up, participatory structure [ 48 ].…”

“…The notion of community resilience is gaining increasing significance in contemporary society, especially as many communities around the world appear to be gradually losing resilience in the face of challenges such as climate change, the outmigration of young people, and socio-economic ruptures [35,36]. Previous research on community resilience has gradually shifted from the system's recovery to its original state to the ability of transformation and learning, focusing more on influencing mechanisms [37][38][39][40], practical strategies [41][42][43], evolution and reconstruction [44,45], building paths [46,47], and resilience management [48]. Resilience evaluation is an important part of resilience research, and most of them establish evaluation index systems from the perspectives of economy, ecology, and society [49].…”
