Pollen extracts reduce the hepatotoxicity of paracetamol in mice

Abstract: Cernitins are preparations obtained from plant pollen which contain numerous compounds of potential biological significance. This work deals with the influence of cernitins upon acute paracetamol toxicity in mice. The survival rate and indices of hepatic injury: aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities, bilirubin level in serum, glutathione and cytochrome P-450 content in liver, liver weight, histopathologic picture of the liver and presence of glycogen and lipids in stained liver sections, under d… Show more

“…However, when it was administered with toxic substances, it protected liver cells from their harmful effect, which indicates, in turn, its ability to prevent toxication. In the detoxifying process, an important role is played by polyphenols, mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids [ 28 31 ].…”

Pollen extract also has been reported to reduce hepatotoxicity of paracetamol (Juzwiak et al, 1992) and to prevent poisoning caused by organic solvents (Ceglecka et al, 1992). Numerous substances have been isolated from pollen extract; amino acids, carbohydrates, deoxyribosides, enzymes, coenzymes, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, sterols (Kvanta, 1968;Nielsen and Holmstrom, 1957) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (Seppanen ef al., 1989).…”
