Pollinator diversity (Hymenoptera and Diptera) in semi-natural habitats in Serbia during summer

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess species diversity and population abundance of the two main orders of pollinating insects, Hymenoptera and Diptera. The survey was conducted in 16 grassland fragments within agro-ecosystems in Vojvodina, as well as in surrounding fields with mass-flowering crops. Pollinators were identified and the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index was used to measure their diversity. Five families, 7 subfamilies, 26 genera and 63 species of insects were recorded. All four big pollinator … Show more

“…Line transects and observation plot data were pooled to increase the number of recorded adult syrphids per study site. Samplings were carried out once in mid‐June and mid‐August 2015 and 2016 at suitable weather conditions, i.e., temperature minimum 15°C (temperature is a limiting factor for adult syrphids activity; Mudri‐Stojnic, Andric, Józan, & Vujic, ), no rain and wind, dry vegetation and sunshine. Sampling time was restricted to the period of 10:00–17:00 to cover maximum pollinator activity.…”

“…The study sites were all located within or next to agricultural used grasslands, while the amount of semi-natural habitats such as forests is generally spare (Mudri-Stojnić et al, 2012). Methodology of sampling and site selection can be read in the originial paper.…”

“…These two methods were used because they are suitable for use in alpine meadows. Moreover, these methods were studied because they are regularly used but usually separately (Frank, 1999;Sobota & Twardowski, 2004;Marcos-García et al, 2012;Mudri-Stojnić et al, 2012;Power et al, 2016;Walcher et al, 2017). The aim of the present work was to determine which of these two sampling methods recorded the most species and individuals of adult syrphids.…”

“…There were four observation sessions (60 min per meadow) both in June and August 2015 when weather conditions were suitable, i.e. minimum temperature 15°C (temperature is a limiting factor for adult syrphid activity (Mudri-Stojnić et al, 2012), no rain or wind, dry vegetation and sunshine. The time of sampling was restricted to between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. when syrphids are most active visiting fl owers and was carried out by the same people, that is, they had the same experience of identifying syrphids.…”
