Heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems is one of the most important threats of human health and food chain. Thus, in this study, the level of Cd, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb and Zn accumulation in surface sediments and in Galatea paradoxa, were investigated to estimate their potential health risks via consumption to residents alongside the Mono river, Togo-Benin border. Samples were collected at two fishing areas and analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry Moreover, the likely health risks developed as a result of human contamination by heavy metal through clam consumption was also assessed using target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). The mean maximal metal concentrations (μg/g dw) were as follows: Fe (25624) > Mn (1176.0) > Zn (23.29) > Pb (4.67) > Hg (0.038) in silty sediments and Fe (15692) > Mn (654.78) > Zn (12.53) > Pb (2.42) > Hg (0.034) in sandy sediments. Cd content were all below the detectable limit. When compared against some consensus-based sediment quality guidelines (TEL, ERL, AFNOR), it was observed that all the concentrations, excluding Fe levels in the samples, were lower than reference values. Similarly, computed PLI was less than 1 indicating that the lower tidal parts of the Mono were unpolluted. The accumulation pattern of studied trace metals in the clams followed a slightly different trend from that found in the sediments (Fe>Zn>Mn>Hg>Pb>Cd). Fe (1353 ± 162 μg/g dw) and Zn (51,8 ± 8.9 μg/g dw) content in whole tissues of G. paradoxa were well above the maximum concentration allowable by food safety criteria. In contrast, Cd (0.097 mg/kg dw), Hg (0.24 mg/kg dw) and Pb (0.18 mg/kg dw) content were very low. Computed THQ values were all below 1, with highest results found in the small size clams regardless of the heavy metals. The HI values indicate that none of the analyzed heavy metals may pose serious risk to consumers through the clams studied. The highest risk was posed by small clams, followed in decreasing order by medium and large clams. We therefore suggest that the clams taken from main fishing locations at Mono river are safe to eat.

The hydrosystem Lac Togo-Lagoon of Aného is located in a watershed where phosphate mining of trace element-rich phosphorites takes place. This activity generates various types of wastes that are dumped into the environment without prior treatment. In addition, there are contributions of its tributaries after leaching of agricultural and urban soils. All this contributes to the degradation of the water quality of this ecosystem. The aim of this study is to assess the level of trace elements contamination of the waters from the hydrosystem Lake Togo-Lagoon of Aného and its spatio-seasonal variations. In the dry and rainy season, the physicochemical parameters of waters were measured according to French standards (AFNOR). The trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometer coupled to a hydride and cold vapour generator. The spatial distribution was evaluated using maps which were performed by ordinary kriging interpolation method of ArcGIS 10.2.2 software. The results showed that the average dry season concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.0001) than those of the rainy season except that of Zn. The average concentrations (in μg/l) observed for Cd: (39.28; 24.63), Pb: (216.82; 66.44), Cr: (197.00; 69.05) and Ni: (100.06; 66.50), respectively, in dry and rainy season were significantly higher than the WHO standards. However, overall trace elements contamination has been noted with polymetallic contamination indices which reached 4.14 in the dry season and 2.41 in the rainy season. This contamination is mainly of anthropogenic origin and comes from the intrusion of seawater loaded with phosphate effluents in the dry season and the leaching of mining and agricultural soils in the rainy season. The results proved that this lagoon ecosystem is polluted by trace elements mainly caused by phosphate mining. Thus, it deserves special attention for its better management for a sustainable development.

The influence of the pollutants in surface water quality when used for drinking water is of great concern in many developing countries. This study seeks to characterize the types of pollution in Aghien lagoon and its tributaries. For the sampling, water was taken at a depth of 50 cm from the earth surface. Samples were analyzed by the spectrometric method of molecular absorption with sulfosalicylic acid for the nitrate, spectrophotometric method of molecular absorption for the nitrites, colorimetric determination with indophenol blue for the ammonium, colorimetric method for the orthophosphates and the phosphorus, filtration method on glass fiber (0.45 μm) for the Suspended Solids (SS), manometric method based on the respirometer principle for the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD 5 ), Dichromate method for the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique for the heavy metals (iron, Manganese), on April and June 2015. The analysis of these physico-chemical parameters revealed that, all the year round, these waters contain real conductivity values comprised between 51 and 161.1 µS/cm, redox potential between 100.3 and 174.4 mV; nitrate between 0.23 and 6.72 mg/L. On the other hand, and over the same period, the waters of the Mé river and the channel had COD values comprised between 33 and 58.7 mg/L. Concerning the Djibi rivers SS were between 36.66 and 50 mg/L, dissolved oxygen between 1.46 and 1.59 mg/L; ammonium between 2.44 and 2.69 mg/L regardless the seasons. The results show that during the two seasons, the Aghien lagoon is the less polluted by the physico-chemical parameters, whereas for the same period, Mé and channel waters are the most charged with organic matters deriving from plants. As for the Djibi river, it remained the most polluted, as certified by the high values in SS and nutrient regardless of the seasons.
