Pollution status, spatial distribution and ecological risk of heavy metals in sediments of a drinking water lake in South Eastern China

Abstract: This study investigates the pollution status, spatial distribution of heavy metals including Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb, in sediments from the Longhu Lake, and evaluates possible ecological risk of these metals. Average concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were 2.1, 3.5, 8.0 and 2.5 times higher than Grade I Chinese soil quality standard respectively. The geo-accumulation index indicates that the lake sediments are moderate to heavily contaminated by Zn, Cd and Pb, which may have higher toxic effects tha… Show more

“…Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential and noxious metal in environmental mediums. The intensified blooming of chemical, fertilizer, pesticide, marine shipping, and petrochemical industries globally is increasing the discharge of chemical pollutants, including Cd to the lagoons, rivers, lakes, and oceans [1][2][3]. Due to these chemical pollutants, the biological quality and ecological environment of whole marine and terrestrial ecosystems are damaged, intensifying the degree of pollution [4,5].…”

“…Examination of the geographical distribution of the toxic substances Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in deposits from Longhu Lake to determine their pollutant levels and associated environmental dangers was performed. Zn, Cd, and Pb are moderately to highly polluted in lake sediments, according to the GI (The Geo-accumulation Index), and these elements may be more harmful than some other materials [11]. The results of this study will give important new information on the possible environmental effects of farming activities on the delta region's water quality.…”

“…Several indices are used to measure water used for drinking, irrigation, recreation and domestic and industrial purposes. Multivariate statistical analysis, WOI, heavy metal pollution index (HPI), sodium percentage (Na %), sodium absorption rate (SAR) and magnesium hazard (MH) are usually used on the surface waters of rivers (Uddin et al 2021).…”
