PolSAR Ship Detection with Optimal Polarimetric Rotation Domain Features and SVM

Abstract: Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) can obtain fully polarimetric information, which provides chances to better understand target scattering mechanisms. Ship detection is an important application of PolSAR and a number of scattering mechanism-based ship detection approaches have been established. However, the backscattering of manmade targets including ships is sensitive to the relative geometry between target orientation and radar line of sight, which makes ship detection still challenging. This wo… Show more

“…The similarity metric between pixels is defined based on the symmetrized Kullback-Leibler divergence [32] of polarimetric covariance matrixes as introduced in [10], after comparing the detection performance of P vi computed using different distance metrics on synthetic data. The expression of the symmetrized Kullback-Leibler divergence is as follows [18]:…”

“…Recently, in RET detection, many methods exploiting the features of clutter have been developed [25][26][27][28]. In these feature-domain detection methods, features are extracted from range cells as detection statistics, and then targets and clutter are distinguished in the feature space.…”

“…The majority of the above approaches generally rely on only intensity information of each polarization channel of single PolSAR data for similar pixel selection. It is known that the polarimetric phase and cross-correlation between two channels contain rich information for similar pixel characterization [27][28][29][30][31]. The neglect of these valuable sources may lead to inaccurate selection of similar pixel candidates and may degrade final speckle filtering performance.…”
