Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/β-Cyclodextrin Pseudorotaxane Complexes as Sustainable Dispersing and Retarding Materials in a Cement-Based Mortar

Abstract: Pseudorotaxane complexes between β-CD and mPEG derivatives bearing a carboxylic acid function (mPEG–COOH) were synthesized and investigated for their dispersing properties in a cement-based mortar. The formation of mPEG–COOH derivatives and their pseudorotaxanes was investigated by 1D nuclear magnetic resonance, diffusion ordered spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis experiments. Mortar tests clearly indicate that mPEG–COOH@β-CD-interpenetrated supramolecules show excellent dispersing abilities. In addi… Show more

“…The TGA graph of the PNCDHA polymer ( Figure 4 ) demonstrated three phases of degradation that indicated three components in the PNCDHA polymer. The first, around 90–100 °C, resulted from the evaporation of water from the surface of the polymer [ 34 , 35 ]. The second, at 200–230 °C, accompanied by a weight loss of 38.5%, may possibly be a consequence of the partial degradation of HA [ 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”

“…Similar trends were also noted for the PEG 10 PCL y series (SI, Figure S10), indicating that even prior to lyophilization/reconstitution, the addition of β-CD promoted significant aggregation and morphological changes in the micelles when the PEG M n was >2 kDa. This behavior may be related to the formation of pseudo-rotaxanes between the β-CD and the PEG corona of the micelles, with subsequent hydrogen-bonding between the β-CD leading to aggregation of the micelles [46][47][48][49]. β-CD is also known to form inclusion complexes with PCL, which may also contribute to the disruption of the micelle morphology [50][51][52][53].…”
