Poly(lactic acid)/Polyethylenimine Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Biocomposite Films for Food Packaging

Abstract: The environmental pollution issues associated with petrochemical-derived plastics have urged the search for a new class of sustainable plastics. The utilization of bioplastics in the packaging field has been increasing due to the exhaustion of fuel resources. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a hastily industrialized candidate among the biobased plastics family. The disadvantages of PLA like poor ductility and poor gas barrier characteristics limit its end use as food packaging material. Therefore, the present study… Show more

“…The OTR values of NI/MSN membrane and 1MSN/NI/PLA membrane were reduced by about 14.81% and 27.31%, respectively, relative to PLA membrane. The addition of modified nisin and MSN to the PLA matrix increases the distance of O 2 through the route, forming a zigzag route that acts as a barrier to O 2 30,40 . And for 2MSN/NI/PLA and 3MSN/NI/PLA membranes, the reductions were 32.87% and 34.72%, respectively.…”

For 1NI/MSN incorporation, nisin was fully loaded into MSN with a large number of agglomerated agglomerates and more modifiers in the PLA matrix, which had a greater hindering effect.…”

“…319 PLA has been granted "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) status by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can be used as a packaging material capable of coming into contact with food and beverages (Figure 6). [320][321][322][323] PLA can be used to produce plastic bottles for water; however, its barrier properties are low and therefore it is not recommended for storing some types of beverages. 324 Regarding its mechanical performance, PLA is brittle, [325][326][327] with less than 10% elongation at break 328,329 and has low impact resistance (commonly mentioned value: 2.5 kJ/m 2 ), [330][331][332] so its use is limited for some applications.…”
