Poly (methacrylic acid) modified biomass for enhancement adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+

Abstract: In this study, the graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid onto the biomass of baker's yeast was carried out in aqueous medium using potassium persulfate (PPS) as initiator. The poly (methacrylic acid) modified biomass obtained was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and microscopic analyses. The number of functional groups was determined by potentiometric titration. The adsorption capacity of the modified biomass for Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Cu 2… Show more

“…9a, peaks at 3298, 2927, 1648, 1542, 1243 and 1077 cm À1 are present in the BY spectrum. 43 Typically, the strong and broad band at around 3298 cm À1 is attributed to the overlapping O-H and N-H stretching bands, while the peak at 2927 cm À1 corresponds to the C-H stretching vibrations of CH, -CH 2 and CH 3 groups. 44,45 The peaks at 1648 and 1542 cm À1 conform with those of the C]O and N-H stretching vibration, and the peaks at 1243 and 1077 cm À1 can be assigned to the C-N and C-O stretching vibration, respectively.…”
