Poly(α‐methylstyrene‐b‐styrene) by a cationic mechanism

Abstract: Block copolymers of styrene and α‐methylstyrene were obtained by a cationic mechanism involving a single‐step addition in the m‐chloroperbenzoic acid/liquid sulfur dioxide system. This result was possible because of the difference in the reactivity of these monomers in the temperatures of −40°C, −60°C, and −78°C. Under these temperature conditions α‐methylstyrene is more reactive than styrene. The composition of the block copolymers was determined by NMR and TGA analysis in fractionated samples.
