“…Other results of PBDE levels in mussels in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea match ours (Christensen and Platz, 2001, Johansson et al, 2006, Parera et al, 2013, Villaverde-de-Saa et al, 2013, but were a lot higher in the Netherlands, 2.09-12.4 ng/g ww (Van Ael et al, 2012).…”

“…[19,42] PBDE concentration in the North America and in Brazil is very high compared to European levels. However, our data are in good agreement with those reported by Liu et al [43] from Hong Kong marine waters in which green-lipped (Psychotria viridis) mussels as biomonitors were investigated.…”

“…Despite the differences in PBDEs levels, it appears that in environmental samples tetra-and pentacongeners are prevalent on a worldwide basis. [19] As BDE-47 was found to be the most abundant congener in all mussel samples examined, it is postulated that this phenomenon may be due to the high bioaccumulation index of BDE-47 in biota. [14] The only mussel PBDE study from Italy focused on Zebra mussels from Lake Maggiore (Italy), [16] in which the total PBDE concentrations ranged from 4.4 to 51.9 ng/g dw with BDE-47 as the dominant congener.…”

“…Comparing PBDE concentrations in this study with those in bivalves from other Asian countries (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Korea and India) (Ramu et al 2007) and European countries (France, Greenland, UK) (Christensen et al 2002;Johansson et 2006; Fernandes et al 2008) and North America country (USA) (Oros et al 2005), it was found that PBDE levels in mussel tissues from coastal waters of Asia were comparable or higher than those reported for mussel tissues from Europe but lower than mussels from the USA. The mussels in USA were the highest, which was about 5 times higher than our data.…”
