Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Coastal Environments of Valdivia and Valparaíso, Chile

Abstract: PAHs and PCBs were measured in the mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck) collected from three different sites along the coast of Valdivia and Valparaiso, South-Central and Central Chile, respectively. Pollution at these sites is considered low with PAHs originating mainly from pyrolytic sources according to the Phenanthrene/Anthracene and Fluoranthene/Pyrene ratios. Temporal variation of PAHs was observed in Valdivia, while site variation was observed along the

“…Gram-positive bacteria are more commonly observed in organic rich habitats (Fenical, 1993 ). Water samples from Valparaíso Bay are influenced by contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as with heavy metals (Campos et al, 1987 ; Palma-Fleming et al, 2008 ; Fuentes et al, 2015 ). It can also be influenced by hydrographic features such as seasonal upwelling which can supply nutrients to shallow waters (Capone and Hutchins, 2013 ).…”

“…The Corral Bay area, XIV Region of Chile, is located at the mouth of the Valdivia and Tornagaleones estuaries (39°S, 73°18'W). The bay is about 15 km downstream of the Valdivia city, and during the last decades its environment has been altered mainly through anthropogenic influences 18 . More recently, the area has undergone dramatic changes due to increasing environmental-related activities that include waste water emissions, industrial and domestic solid and liquid wastes, aerial emissions, cattle and agriculture activities, intentional and unintentional oil spills from motor driven boats and ships.…”

“…s-triazines) and polychlorobiphenyls are POPs that are widely distributed in the environment. In recent years, s-triazine herbicides and PCBs have been detected in aquatic systems in Central and Southern Chile (Cooman et al, 2005;Palma-Fleming et al, 2008).…”
