Polyhedral Clathrate Hydrates. XVI. Structure of Isopropylamine Octahydrate

Abstract: The crystal structure of isopropylamine octahydrate, 1O(CH s )2CHNH2"SOH20, mp -4°C, has been determined from three-dimensional Weissenberg film data obtained at -160°C with CuKa radiation. The crystals are hexagonal, P~/mmc, with a=12.30 A, c=24.85 k The structure was determined from the Patterson function and refined anisotropically to an R of 0.09 for 1041 observed reflections. The water structure is a clathrate-type hydrogen-bonded framework, which can be related to that of the cubic gas hydrates. It consis… Show more

“…The lattice parameters agree with values of pure i-PA hydrates reported in the literature (a = 12.30 and c = 24.85 Å at 113 K). 31 On the other hand, the pattern of 5.6 mol% (i-PAÁ17.0H 2 O) in Fig. 1c was identified as a mainly cubic Fd% 3m structure (a = 17.253(1) Å) with little fraction of hexagonal ice (the Le Bail fittings of the patterns are shown in the ESI †).…”

“…The i-PAÁ8.0H 2 O hydrate contains octahedral (4 6 6 2 ), dodecahedral (5 12 ), tetradecahedral (4 2 5 8 6 4 ), and hexadecahedral (5 12 6 4 ) cages, 31 while the n-PAÁ6.5H 2 O hydrate contains the 'concave' polyhedron, which is the fused structure of 5 12 6 2 , 4 1 5 10 6 2 , 4 1 5 10 6 5 , and 4 2 5 8 6 5 convex polyhedra, and additional convex polyhedron (4 2 5 8 6 1 ) cages. 32 The amino groups of both hydrates are hydrogen-bonded to water molecules in each host framework.…”

“…Packing diagrams of these two structures are presented in the Figure below. Moreover, piperidine hydrate 8.10 were isostructural with iso-propylamine hydrate 8.00 [6,7]. All synthesised crystals were also characterised with Raman spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction.…”
