Polymer leak with the Ovation Abdominal Stent Graft System: Early recognition and treatment

Abstract: Objective Endovascular aneurysm repair can be performed using multiple commercially available stent graft systems, each with their own unique design features and potential complications. This study evaluated the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of patients who developed an anaphylactic reaction following systemic exposure to the polymer used with the Ovation Abdominal Stent Graft System (Endologix Inc., Irvine, CA). Methods We reviewed all reports related to polymer leak with the device received by the man… Show more

“…Twenty-four individuals had anaphylactic symptoms, with hypotension being the predominant complaint due to anaphylaxis. There were no fatalities, and the aortic aneurysm was noted to be successfully excluded in 23 cases at the end of the procedure ( 45 ). In addition, three patients experienced intraoperative polymer leak (0.2%) in the retrospective analysis of the ENCORE database ( 42 ).…”

“…The polymer leak was reported in 26 patients over more than 10.000 endograft implants. Factors that seem to contribute to the risk of polymer leak include the initial manufacturing process for the device, excessive graft manipulation, early ballooning before complete polymer cure and lower body temperature, which can slow the polymer cure rate [102].…”

“…These risks include immediate or late type 1A EL due to sizing J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f issues, aortic stenosis, and ring rupture with leak of polymer at the time of repair. [8][9][10][11][12][13] These kinds of issues can require neck-related adjunctive procedures such as ballooning, stenting, or graft extension either at the time of initial repair or in a delayed fashion, or graft explantation.…”
