Polymeric Liquid Membrane Electrodes Incorporated with Undecylcalix[4]-Resorcinarene for Screening of Neutral Forms of Diaminobenzene Isomers

Abstract: The PVC supported liquid membrane electrodes incorporated with undecylcalix[4]resorcinarene (UDC[4]Rene) generates a cationic potentiometric response after stimulation by neutral (unprotonated) form of diaminobenzene isomers. The potentiometric signals were generated upon the formation of supramolecular complex between the UDC[4]Rene (host) and diaminobenzene (guest) at the organic-aqueous interface. In this paper for the first time we report the generation of cationic potential signal by electrode incorporate… Show more

“…These hydrogen bonds increased the acidity of OH group, and as the consequence, H þ ions dissociated to the aqueous layer adjacent to the organic phase [1]. It has been recently discovered, that the potentiometric signals could be also generated when the guest molecules contained NH 2 groups, and OH groups were attached to the host molecules [3]. These phenomena indicated that formation at the interfaces of supramolecular complexes based on hydrogen bonding lead to the changing of acidity/basicity of guests molecules, which facilitated their dissociation.…”

“…According to presented mechanism of anionic potentiometric signal generation by membranes modified with nitrogen containing macromolecules as host molecules and stimulated with neutral form of phenol derivatives the crucial phenomenon is transfer of protons from the membrane surface to surface of water phase. From this point of view it was logical and interesting to check if generation of cationic potentiometric signal by membranes modified with macrocycles containing the phenolic group stimulated with unprotonated derivatives of aniline would be possible [25,52] There are summarization of systematic research results of the intermolecular recognition processes at the water/polymer membrane border between some derivatives of undecylcalix [4]resorcinarene ( Figure 2) and neutral (unprotonated) forms of aniline and its derivatives such as: aminoaniline, chloroaniline, hydroxyaniline, methylaniline, methoxyaniline and nitroaniline obtained with using potentiometry. In Table 4 the values of potentiometric response of PVC supported liquid membranes incorporated with calixarene host generated in the presence of aniline derivatives are collected.…”

“…In general, the host-guest recognition process in the case of these compounds could be realized mainly by the creation of hydrogen bonds between the ligand and target molecules, and also by electrostatic interactions, Lewis acid-base and π-π electron interactions (33)(34)(35)(36) (37). The para-isomer with the highest basicity generates the highest potentiometric response.…”
