Polypharmacy With Antipsychotics, Antidepressants, or Benzodiazepines and Mortality in Schizophrenia

Abstract: Benzodiazepine use was associated with a marked increase in mortality among patients with schizophrenia, whereas the use of an antidepressant or several concomitant antipsychotics was not. Antidepressant use was associated with decreased suicide deaths. The literature indicates that long-term use of benzodiazepines among patients with schizophrenia is more prevalent in other countries (eg, the United States) compared with Finland, which suggests that benzodiazepine use may contribute to mortality among this pa… Show more

“…Given that a large proportion of patients with psychotic illness are also exposed to antidepressants and benzodiazepines (5), it is somewhat surprising that the consequences of cumulative exposure to these medications have not drawn much attention. Thus far, one study has investigated mortality and current antidepressant use in schizophrenia (6), reporting a significantly decreased risk for suicide and a nonsignificant relationship between overall mortality during current antidepressant use compared with no use. To date, the relationship between benzodiazepine use and mortality has been studied in two publications (6,7).…”
