Polyphenols from Blumea laciniata Extended the Lifespan and Enhanced Resistance to Stress in Caenorhabditis elegans via the Insulin Signaling Pathway

Abstract: Blumea laciniata is widely used as a folk medicine in Asia, but relevant literature on it is rarely reported. We confirmed that polyphenol extract (containing chlorogenic acid, rutin, and luteolin-4-O-glucoside) from B. laciniata (EBL) showed strong antioxidant ability in vitro. Hence, in this work, we applied Caenorhabditis elegans to further investigate the antioxidant and anti-ageing abilities of EBL in vivo. The results showed that EBL enhanced the survival of C. elegans under thermal stress by 12.62% and … Show more

“…Among these, the effect of 250 µg/mL was the best, and the surviv rate was increased to 82.3%, which was almost double than that in the control group, wh when the concentration of polysaccharides was over 500 µg/mL, especially 1000 µg/m the survival of worms was not significantly changed. A high concentration of polysacch rides was also shown to have some toxic effects on HUVEC cells, hence a higher conce The C. elegans is a good research model to evaluate the pharmacological activity of natural products like polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavone, and so on [30][31][32]. We found polysaccharides showed excellent protection of cells against H 2 O 2 -induced oxidative stress.…”

“…Based on a nematode model, purple pitanga fruit enhances resistance to H 2 O 2 oxidative stress and inhibits ROS [ 13 ]. Blumen laciniata polyphenols [ 14 ] and orange extracts [ 15 ] promote an anti-stress response and prolong lifespan. In addition, C. elegans have been entirely sequenced, and 60–80% of genes are high-homologous to humans.…”
