Polystyrene/calcium phosphate nanocomposites: Contact angle studies based on water and methylene iodide

Abstract: Abstract. Polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing in a Brabender Plasticoder with calcium phosphate as the nanofiller. These nanocomposites showed improvement in almost all physical properties. Contact angle measurements of the composites with water and methylene iodide were carried out. Various contact angle parameters such as total solid surface free energy, work of adhesion, interfacial free energy and spreading coefficient were analysed. The interaction parameter between the poly… Show more

“…The water contact angle values of the test liquids were measured by putting a sessile drop of test liquid on the surface of the films [39][40][41][42]. Each modified p(HEMA-GMA) films surface has different functional groups such as \OH, \NH 2 , \NH\, \SO 3 H, \COOH, \CH 3 and aromatic rings for ionic, polar and hydrophobic interaction with proteins and cells.…”

“…The basic parameters (γ − ) of the p(HEMA-GMA)-GA-Phe and p(HEMA-GMA)-GA-HANI are larger compared to their acidic parameter (γ + ). The relatively high basic (γ − ) component of the surface energy is caused by the electron ion pairs of oxygen atoms contained in the copolymer (hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl functionalities), which are effective in Lewis base sites [39][40][41][42][43]. On the other hand, opposite trend was observed for p(HEMA-GMA)-A p(HEMA-GMA)-EDA, p(HEMA-GMA)-HMDA p(HEMA-GMA)-GA-Arg and p(HEMA-GMA)-GA-His modified films.…”

“…Elongation at break value of BNN-PS composites is almost same as that of neat PS showing the good reinforcement between the filler and the matrix. A basic model that describes the elongation at break given by Equation (16) [ [41][42][43]:…”

“…The surface characteristics of any composite largely govern the wetting phenomena and hence the adhesion behavior [29][30][31]. Contact angle measurement of liquids on solid surfaces is a technique for quantifying the wettability and surface characteristics of solids [29].…”

“…11. The work of adhesion can be linked to the filler matrix interaction of filler with a liquid comparable with the virgin polymer [31]. Even though the liquid (water) selected do not imitate the neat polymer exactly, an attempt was done to correlate the work of adhesion of the nanocomposites with the filler matrix interaction [31].…”
