“…According to their characteristics, these particles can exist in the form of float, sink, and settle in water (De Villiers, 2018). There are micro and nanoplastics in all parts of aquatic ecosystems, but their effects on freshwater aquatic animals have not been investigated adequately, and most studies evaluated the effect of micro and nanoplastics on ecologically, economically, and conservationally important species (Hollerova et al, 2023; Schirinzi et al, 2020; Setala et al, 2018).…”

“…The present results proved that the expression of pro‐inflammatory cytokines, such as IL1β, IFN‐γ, and TNF‐α, increased by PS‐NPs that have negative impact on the immune system. Cytokines are secreted by immune cells to regulate the immune response and inflammation in the body during stressful conditions (Ahmadifar et al, 2021; Hollerova et al, 2023). Similar to our results, the IL1β expression rose in zebrafish (Lu et al, 2018), European sea bass larvae (Mazurais et al, 2015), and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) (Hollerova et al, 2023) after exposure to PS‐MPs.…”

“…The procedure for coating and drying the samples was analogous to that in Chapter 2.1. Pellets were subjected to the examination of morphology employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM; MIRA3, Tescan Orsay Holding, Czech Republic) to visualize the surface and differences in its morphology ( 26 , 27 ).…”

“…Similarly, PS is one of the most commonly produced plastics globally [ 19 ], with research revealing that PS microbeads can accumulate in sea urchin intestines and negatively affect their embryonic development [ 20 ]. Research has also found that ingestion of PS particles can cause damage to the liver and gills of rainbow trout, resulting in negative impacts on their health [ 21 ]. Scholars have also found that polystyrene microplastics can weaken the predator-induced defenses of Daphnia , which may have a certain impact on aquatic ecology [ 22 ].…”
