Polystyrene-supported thiosemicarbazone-transition metal complexes: synthesis and application as heterogeneous catalysts

Abstract: Functionalized polymers are found to be highly efficient in immobilizing transition metal ions. Crosslinked polystyrene supported Schiff's base complexes of metal ions such as Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) are very effective as heterogeneous catalysts. The catalytic activity of these metal complexes has been studied in the decomposition of H2O2 and in the epoxidation of cyclohexene and styrene. The reactions show a first order dependence on the concentration of both the substrates and the catalyst. The in… Show more

“…Sorption values were obtained such as 400 mg UO 2 2+ /g of dry amidoximated poly (DPAAm) and 250 mg UO 2 2+ /g of dry amidoximated graft polymer. Chettiar and Sreekumar synthesised dithiosemicarbazone functionalised polymer, namely, poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) and poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate-divinyl benzene) beads having definite porosity for adsorption of toxic metal ions [ 181 ]. Improved crosslinked polyacrylamides containing various functional moieties have been synthesised by transamidation reaction in the aquatic and non-aquatic medium by Hofmann’s reaction.…”

“…Nevertheless, three approaches can be found in the literature for polyTSC synthesis: (i) metallopolymers, (ii) polymers bearing TSC side chains, and (iii) polymers bearing TSC backbones. Metallopolymer TSCs are reported for several metals like Zn, Hg, or Cu, while the TSC group is participating in the backbone formation or is present as a side chain. In the second approach, radically polymerized styrene or acrylate resins were formed, which already had TSC groups installed as side-chains of the monomers, or were further modified to yield them. Other polymer supports like chitosan and cellulose have been postmodified to obtain TSC functional materials as well. In a third approach, the TSC function is incorporated in the backbone of the polymer. Rasool et al condensed thiosemicarbazide with 2 equivalents of salicylaldehyde prior to the polycondensation with formaldehyde and barbituric acid (see Figure A) .…”
