Polyurethane/polyhydroxyurethane hybrid polymers and their applications as adhesive bonding agents

Abstract: A polyurethane/polyhydroxyurethane (PU/PHU) hybrid polymer was synthesized by reaction of a cyclic-carbonate-terminated prepolymer with triethylenetetramine without employing isocyanates in the final curing step. This cured elastomer contains traditional urethane linkages from the initial prepolymer reaction as well as hydroxyurethane linkages from the final chain extension reaction. The PU/PHU hybrid exhibits microphase separation as made apparent by the presence of two glass transitions and elastomeric prope… Show more

“…Furthermore, varying segment content as well as the composition and nature of the reagents, different polyurethanes can be tailored (Tharcis, Badel, JĂ©ol, Fleury, & MĂ©chin, 2016). In this way, different soft and hard segments molecular architectures, both crystalline and amorphous, can be obtained, leading to polyurethanes with diverse properties, opening the way for a wide range of applications such as coatings, adhesives, or in printing or medicine (Leitsch, Heath, & Torkelson, 2016;Mao et al, 2015;Mo et al, 2015;Si et al, 2016). Recently, the increase of global environmental awareness, the aim of reducing organic volatile compounds and the guidelines to tackle climate change, have promoted the research focused on waterborne systems ("Framework convention on climate change," 2015).…”

“…Adhesive properties of PHUs can be controlled by preparing hybrid PU/PHU polymers.I ndeed, ac yclic carbonate-capped PU prepolymerp repared by standard isocyanate chemistry was reactedw ith triethylenetetraamine (TETA) to yield PU/PHU hybrid polymers. [189] The latter were evaluated for their adhesion to variouss ubstrates such as polyimide, PVC, and aluminum substrates and compared with standardP Us. Measured Tpeel forces for the synthesized PU/PHU hybrid were 7.8, 10.5 and 3.4 Nmm À1 for polyimide, PVC, anda luminum, respectively.T hese resultss uggestt hat PU/PHU hybrid polymers could exhibit better or comparable adhesive properties than the PU standards.…”
