Popliteal Artery Aneurysms

Abstract: Altogether 59 patients with 76 popliteal artery aneurysms were treated during the last 36 years. There were 50 (85%) male and 9 (15%) female patients with an average age of 61 years. Nineteen (32%) patients had bilateral aneurysms. The clinical manifestations of the aneurysms included ruptures 4 (5.3%); deep venous thrombosis 4 (5.3%); sciatic nerve compression 1 (1.3%); leg ischemia 52 (68.4%), and asymptomatic pulsatile masses 15 (19.7%). Seventy (92%) aneurysms were atherosclerotic, one (1.3%) mycotic, and … Show more

“…Eleven studies described a median proportion of 11% of limbs (range, 5%-67%) presenting with acute ischemia. 24,26,27,30,33,36,37,41,42,45,49 A median proportion of 38.25% of patients (range, 0%-100%) diagnosed with bilateral PAES was described in 26 studies. In 12 of 30 studies, a median proprtion of 17.5% of limbs (range, 6%-31%) diagnosed with PAES were asymptomatic, whereas this proportion was unclear in seven studies.…”

“…4,5 For this reason, elective surgical management of asymptomatic aneurysms larger than 20 mm has been advocated by several authors. 6,7 Results of open repair of PAAs are good, particularly in the elective setting, with high rates of graft patency and freedom from amputation during follow-up. 8e10 In recent years, in the era of large spreading of endovascular treatment in different vascular fields, PAA exclusion with stentegraft has been emerging as a possible alternative to open surgery, particularly in high-risk patients.…”

“…11 The method involves percutaneous injection of adhesive components using ultrasound and screening control, following successful occlusion of the aneurysm neck by angioplasty balloon. 11 The epidemiology and clinical manifestations of popliteal aneurysms were reviewed by Davidovic et al 12 They reviewed 59 patients with 76 popliteal aneurysms in a 36-year period. This study included 50 male patients (85%) and 9 female patients (15%), with an average age of 61 years.…”
