Population‐based study of renal cell carcinoma in children in Germany, 1980–2005

Abstract: Objectives: This study aims to (1) follow up and characterize infant growth patterns during the first year of life in Bolivia, and (2) determine whether there exists an association between weight gain and cognitive development in children living near contaminated mining industries. Methods: Data on 175 children participating to the ToxBol (Toxicity in Bolivia) birth cohort were analyzed. Rapid‐growth during the first 6 months was defined as a change in weight z‐score > 0.67 while slow‐growth was defined as a w… Show more

“…Its likely to present with tumors at higher stages and also those with hematogenous metastases seem to have a dismal prognosis [5,8,9]. However in the majority of cases, there has been no evidence of disease following resection.…”

“…VEGFR-targeted therapies and mTOR inhibitors seem to be active in Xp11 translocation RCC [3,6]. The clinical efficacy of new front-line multityrosine kinase inhibitors that target the vascular endothelial growth factor pathway (sunitinib, sorafenib) and agents that target the mTOR pathway (temsirolimus) have improved the outcome for adults with RCC [7,8]. Hence identification of these cases helps in impoving prognosis.…”

“…8,[14][15][16][17] For the patients with mRCC there has been no effective therapy, despite the use of behind surgery of immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. 8,17,[23][24][25] Significant differences in the epidemiology and the biology of adult and pediatric RCC severely limit our ability to reliably transfer the knowledge gained among affected adults to children's management. Metastatic disease at presentation is more often described in adults (25%).…”

“…A recent, up-to-date review suggests that conventional clear-cell RCCs are extraordinarily rare in childhood; many cases reported as clear RCC are in fact histologically atypical or have morphologic features of translocation RCC [2]. Chromophobe RCC is even less frequent than other RCC types in children, with less than 20 cases reported in the literature during the last 20 years [3][4][5][6][7].…”
