Population-Based Study on the Epidemiology of Ménière's Disease

Abstract: Background and Objective: Ménière's disease (MD) is a disorder of the inner ear typically showing recurrent acute episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Epidemiologic studies on MD are scarce. We assessed the incidence rates (IRs) of MD and describe the characteristics of MD cases, comparing them to control patients without recorded evidence of MD. Study Design: We conducted a retrospective population-based follow-up study and a nested case-control analysis using data from the UK-based Clinical Pract… Show more

“…16 Moreover, a consistent higher prevalence of migraine in MD has been reported. 41 Furthermore, there have been described cases of MD patients with associated vestibular migraine, suggesting a shared pathophysiology. [42][43][44] This observation could be explained if patients with the overlapping syndrome share some common allelic variants with pleiotropic effects on the brain and the inner ear.…”

“…Similar findings of increased prevalence of anxiety and depression were reported in population based epidemiological studies as well. 19 Despite using a methodology involving a structured psychiatric instrument, patients with MD and MV showed significantly higher prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity (MD=57%, MV=65%) especially anxiety and depressive disorders, than patients with VN (22%), BPPV (15%) and normal subjects (20%). 20 Confirmation of increased prevalence of mental health problems was obtained from larger studies as well.…”

“…In previous studies, the estimated prevalence of MD ranged from 17 to 513 per 100,000 [Havia et al, 2005;Shojaku et al, 2005;Radtke et al, 2008;Harris and Alexander, 2010;Bruderer et al, 2017;Guerra-Jiménez et al, 2017;Tyrrell et al, 2014]. The epidemiology of MD is variable according to the methodological differences, changes over time in diagnostic criteria, and populations surveyed.…”
