Population structure and persistence of Pacific herring following the Great Tohoku earthquake

Abstract: fidelity creates weak but significantly differentiated stable population structure. This process can allow restoration of the genetic characteristics of damaged populations over many generations and can thereby promote the long-term viability of marine fishes that have high gene flow.

“…Natural disasters have profound impacts on global biodiversity (Sagar and Singh, 2005 ; Fattorini, 2010 ; Milner et al, 2013 ; Fraver et al, 2017 ; Ohbayashi et al, 2017 ). As a serious natural disturbance (Pickett and White, 1985 ; Hobbs and Huenneke, 1992 ), earthquake is one of the natural disasters that causes ecosystem degradation (Huang et al, 2017 ; Kitada et al, 2017 ; Tsujimoto et al, 2020 ; Kang et al, 2021 ). Such disturbance may greatly threaten the survival and competition of plant species by increasing mortality and changing habitat quality (Sousa, 1984 ; Lai et al, 2007 ; Huang et al, 2017 ; Ohbayashi et al, 2017 ; Tsujimoto et al, 2020 ).…”

“…6 B ). These estimates correspond to a median age of introgression of roughly 19 and 32 kYA, respectively, based on a generation time of 2.4 years for Pacific herring ( Kitada et al 2017 ; Mikkelsen et al 2018 ). The genomic regions where all Balsfjord haplotypes represent introgression have lower estimates (due to longer introgressed haplotypes) than the respective overall set, both for Atlantic (median age = 2.1*10 3 generations) and Pacific HSRs (median age = 8.5*10 3 generations).…”

Так, тихоокеанская сельдь, обладающая бо ́льшей способностью к миграциям, в том числе в этом регионе, имеет незначительное смешение с особями тихоокеанского побережья о.
