“…The sexual dimorphism in relation to size observed in the present study is a common aspect of hermit-crab biology, as suggested by several previous reports (Fransozo & Mantelatto, 1998;Manjón-Cabeza & García-Razo, 1998;Turra & Leite, 2000;Mantelatto & Martinelli, 2001;Branco et al, 2002;Bertini et al, 2004;Macpherson & Raventos, 2004;Litulo, 2005a, c;Litulo & Tudge, 2005;Mantelatto et al, 2005). According to Abrams (1988), three factors may influence sexual dimorphism in hermit crabs: (1) the difference of energy available for growth, with less somatic growth in females due to greater expenditure of energy in egg production; (2) the larger reproductive effort exhibited by males, which are able to copulate with more than one female; and (3) the larger dimensions of males, to optimize fertilization of the females and win intraspecific fights.…”

“…Probably, the deviation of proportion males/females found in the present study (females more abundant in the middle-size classes) may be attributed to a faster growth of males, to sexual selection and to smaller longevity of females (BERTNESS, 1981;ABRAMS, 1988;BENVENUTO & GHERARDI, 2001). This pattern has been the most common one reported in the literature (WENNER, 1972;MANJÓN-CABEZA & GARCÍA RASO, 1995;GHERARDI & NARDONE, 1997;FRANSOZO & MANTELATTO, 1998;GARCIA & MANTELATTO, 2001) for hermit crab populations inhabiting both the intertidal and infralittoral areas. Unfortunately, we are not able to compare the present results with those of NEGREIROS-FRANSOZO et al (1991) which were obtained from one punctual collection.…”

“…Hermit crabs represent an important portion of many intertidal and moderately deep tropical benthic communities (FRANSOZO & MANTELATTO, 1998). Consequently, this group of decapods provides promising material for study because the establishment of these animals in such environments derives from the evolution of adaptive population strategies.…”

“…Such diVerences are potentially important, both in determining the nature of population regulation within a species, and in determining the nature of interactions between species (Abrams 1988). Sexual dimorphism has been extensively reported for many hermit crabs; almost all studies have focused on the propodus chelipeds and/or these appendages in relation to resource use (Fotheringham 1976;Bertness 1980;Abrams 1988;Manjón-Cabeza and García Raso 1996;Gherardi and Nardone 1997;Fransozo and Mantelatto 1998;Mantelatto and Sousa 2000;Garcia and Mantelatto 2001;Branco et al 2002;Martinelli et al 2002;Litulo 2005;Mantelatto et al 2005). Recently, we demonstrated that the pleopods may be an important aspect to be considered in such studies .…”
