Pore scale study of flow in porous media: Scale dependency, REV, and statistical REV

Abstract: Abstract.Flow in porous media is studied at the pore-scale with lattice Boltzmann simulations on pore geometries reconstructed from computed microtomographic images. Pore scale results are analyzed to give quantities such as permeability, porosity and specific surface area at various scales and at various locations. With this, some fundamental issues such as scale dependency and medium variability can be assessed quantitatively. More specifically, the existence and size of the well known concept, representative… Show more

“…Each pore of the medium should contain several lattice nodes. To make the macroscopic quantities, such as permeability or porosity, almost constant in LBM simulations, more than 240 3 lattices is required (10) . Namely, the approach at the pore scale is perhaps unrealistic to simulate the fluid flow in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale that is the minimum size to determine the macroscopic quantities.…”

“…The solute transport model uses this velocity field for the advection term and calculates the solute concentration at each node in the system. The LB method and lattice gas automata have been used to study permeability, retardation, and dispersion at the pore scale [Zhang et al, 2000;Stockman, 1997]. Recent work has simulated entrapment and subsequent dissolution of nonwetting fluids in 3-D porous media [Marlys and Chen, 1996;Miller et al, 1998].…”

“…В ра-боте [Zhang et al, 2000] введено понятие статистически репрезентативного объема, или SREV (от английского statistically representative volume). Образец является статистически репрезентативным, если стандартное отклонение рассматриваемого свойства меньше 10 % его среднего значения, полученного для всех реализа-ций.…”
