Porosity-strength considerations for cellular concrete

Abstract: The inclusion of air voids in the determination of total porosity for neat cellular concretes permits the determination of a single strengthporosity relation for a given cement. •This relation can be expressed in terms of water-cement ratio-and_ densil_y,_ thus providing_ a simp_le tool for the design of these concretes. L'inclusion des pores d'air clans la d~termination de la porosit~ totale pour les betons cellulaires purs nous permet de determiner une seule relation resistance/porosite pour un ciment donne.… Show more

“…The addition of polymer waste to concrete in various forms (fibers or aggregates), has a number of beneficial effects on the material properties resulting compound, as are weight and density reductions, improved mechanical energy absorption, better toughness, enhanced ductility and impact resistance, improvement of insulation capacity (acoustic and thermal) etc. Along with the above improvements and depending on the type of addition, it can be observed undesired effects, such as reduction of the compression strength or the durability of material due to different mechanisms [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…Richard [6] reviewed the thermal and mechanical characteristics of foam concrete. Hoff [7] reported a porosity-strength model for cellular concrete made with Portland cement, water and preformed foam. Durack and Weiqing [8] proposed a strength-gel space ratio relationship for foam concrete.…”

“…However, in practice, setting up such a delicate apparatus is challenging for concrete manufacturers and a simpler method is preferred. In the literature, Kearsley and Wainwright [14] have successfully used the Hoff equation [15] to estimate the total porosity of foam concrete. Similarly, Zheng [16] has presented an equation to estimate the total …”
