Portable Ultrasound Device Usage and Learning Outcomes Among Internal Medicine Trainees: A Parallel-Group Randomized Trial

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Little is known about how to effectively train residents with point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) despite increasing usage. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether handheld ultrasound devices (HUDs), alongside a year-long lecture series, improved trainee image interpretation skills with POCUS. METHODS: Internal medicine intern physicians (N = 149) at a single academic institution from 2016 to 2018 participated in the study. The 2017 interns (n = 47) were randomized 1:1 to receive personal H… Show more

“…This model allowed both the teachers and the students to take responsibility for achieving success. An alternative yearlong lecture based model, even with handheld ultrasound device (HUD), showed no improvement in knowledge or image interpretation score [12].…”

“…Most interns experienced the same content multiple times (2-3 times/year), which was intentional to assess learning rates with repeated lecture exposure, as has been previously reported. 20 The contents of each lecture were based on previously published guidelines or expert consensus for POCUS training. 7,18,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Objectives To assess whether handheld ultrasound devices (HUDs), alongside a yearlong lecture series, improved trainee point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) usage and ability to acquire images.…”
