Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the reasons that hinder the use of digital libraries. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzed data obtained through a web survey sent to 14,763 faculty members in Brazilian universities. Of the 6,689 respondents, 1,075 (16.1%) reported not using the Capes digital library and 1,017 answered the questionnaire for non-users. Findings Results showed that the main reasons for non-use are lack of knowledge of the existence of the Capes digital library, use of other resources, preference for printed journals and difficulty of access. Eight factors of non-use were elicited: insufficient dissemination, inadequacies in contents, in infrastructure, in access policy, in training and in the interface, personal constraints and personal attitude. The reasons and factors for non-use were categorized as intrinsic and extrinsic to the digital library. Intrinsic reasons relate to characteristics of the Capes digital library. Extrinsic factors are influenced by user characteristics. The chi-square test demonstrated that the variables: area of knowledge, age, hours dedicated to research and computer skills influence non-use. Originality/value This study has contributed to research about non-users of digital libraries, differing from previous research by surveying a large-scale population and by investigating in a single work the reasons for non-use, other electronic sources used by non-users, advantages of using the digital library and intention of non-users to become users if barriers were removed. Qualitative data complemented the quantitative data collected which allowed a more complete picture of the respondent’s positions.

RESumOA construção e socialização do conhecimento científico é um dos pontos mais relevantes para os cenários econômico, científico e social de um país, é através desse processo que a Revista de Administração da UNIMEP (RAUNIMEP) vem se efetivando nos últimos anos como um periódico eletrônico bem-sucedido. O artigo teve como objetivo a análise da produção bibliográfica deste periódico veiculada no período de setembro de 2003 a agosto de 2012, através da coleta de dados secundários e de uma entrevista semiestruturada realizada com o seu editor. A pesquisa realizada mostra uma descrição da publicação do período apresentando informações sobre origem dos artigos, autoria, instituições participantes, as áreas e sub áreas dos artigos, dentre outros aspectos. Inclui considerações sobre o histórico do periódico e seu potencial de crescimento pelo nível de atendimento que vem obtendo dentro dos padrões Qualis CAPES nacionais e internacionais definidos para os periódicos científicos integrantes dos programas de Pós-graduação Strito Sensu. A Educação Profissional (EP) no Brasil tem se constituído ao longo do tempo como campo científico, sendo o reflexo desta configuração apresentada pelos pesquisadores da área em produções científicas, sejam em artigos de periódicos, dissertações, teses entre outros. Apresenta como objetivo principal o mapeamento da produção do conhecimento sobre Educação Profissional relevado pelo Portal de Periódicos da Capes através de artigos científicos. Explana sobre o Portal e a importância da comunicação científica através da materialização dos periódicos científicos, que contribui para o desenvolvimento da ciência. Relata os primeiros resultados alcançados sobre o estudo da configuração do campo da EP no Brasil através do mapeamento da produção sobre a EP, a identificação dos pesquisadores e os periódicos de onde apartem as publicações. Utiliza o método exploratório para o levantamento das produções com a abordagem qualitativa. Conclui-se que este tipo de produção contribui para a compreensão da configuração de um determinado campo de conhecimento. In conclusion, this kind of production contributes for the comprehension of the configuration of a certain knowledge field.
