Poseidon-3 Radar Altimeter: New Modes and In-Flight Performances

Abstract: the altimetry satellite Jason-2 was launched from the Vandenberg site in California. Dedicated to the measure of ocean surface topography, one of the main instruments on-board is a radar altimeter, Poseidon-3, which essentially measures the altimetric range between the spacecraft and the surface.Poseidon-3 is a dual frequency radar altimeter operating in Ku and C bands, very similar to its predecessor Poseidon-2 on-board Jason-1. However some significant improvements have been implemented to improve its tracki… Show more

“…As a successor to T/P and Jason-1, Jason-2 not only inherited the characteristics of its predecessors: a similar payload (Poseidon altimeter) and an identical orbit (inclination:~66 • ; revisit period:~10 days), but also made some improvements in instruments, data processing and algorithms. For instance, the Poseidon-3 altimeter on Jason-2 has a lower instrumental noise and adopts a better tracking algorithm for land and ice surface than preceding generations of Poseidon altimeters [44]. These improvements are expected to increase the Remote Sens.…”

“…Originally, the Jason-2 altimeter receives about 2060 elementary echoes per second. In order to reduce the thermal and speckle noise, waveforms are produced at a 20 Hz rate by averaging elementary echoes over 50 ms on board [44]. Detailed description of waveform sampling is suggested to refer [47].…”

“…We used daily Mean Sea Surface (MSS) from 1995 to 2016, available on Système d'Observation du Niveau des Eaux Littorales (SONEL) networks (www.sonel.org), obtained from different tidal filters (e.g., Doodson filter and Demerliac filter) to reduce the tidal effects. Several such linear filters compute the daily mean sea levels [27,30].…”

“…Poseidon-3 radar altimeter is a two-frequency solid-state altimeter that accurately measures the distance between the satellite and the surface (range). It also provides ionospheric delay corrections over the ocean with a precision of about 2 cm, operating at Ku (13.575 GHz) and C (5.3 GHz) bands [25,27].…”

“…DIODE (Détermination Immédiated 'Obite par DORIS Embarqué) is a further development of the proven DORIS instrument which provides accurate orbit ephemeris on-board in real time . In this mode, the tracker range is calculated from the DIODE navigator's orbit position and height with respect to the Earth's surface on the basis of a geoid and a digital elevation model, respectively (DEM) (Desjonqueres et al 2010).…”
