Position-related differences in morphological characteristics of U14 female handball players

Abstract: The aim was to establish differences in morphological characteristics of 48 selected female younger cadet (U14) handball players (age 13.88±0.46 years) in the playing positions of wings, backs and pivots. The sample of variables embraced 24 morphological measures defining the already established four latent body dimensions. Univariate ANOVA revealed the significant global differences among the three groups of U14 players in 11 morphological measures. Between the backs and pivots no significant differences were… Show more

“…Previously, working demands analyses of elite team handball have been performed (Sibila et al, 2004;Pori & Sibila, 2006;Luig et al, 2008;Michalsik et al, 2013Michalsik et al, , 2014Michalsik et al, , 2015 a,b,c -see chapter 3). These study data indicate a high need for superior acceleration and deceleration capacity, high rates of force development (RFD), and a high ability to perform explosive jumps, fast and hard shots, rapid side-cutting manoeuvres, powerful changes of direction and agility movements , and strength demanding physical confrontations.…”

“…Based on scientific data (Sibila et al, 2004;Luig et al, 2008;Michalsik et al, 2013Michalsik et al, , 2014, high-intensity running does not represent much of total effective playing time. However, the ability to continuously change pace and accelerate throughout the entire match is likely of high?…”

“…Handball is the turn-based game where the participating teams take the role of attackers or defenders according to the ball possession [20]. Physiological demands regarding intensity and volume of physical effort become key factors for efficient performance for particular playing positions [18].…”

“…Physiological demands regarding intensity and volume of physical effort become key factors for efficient performance for particular playing positions [18]. It is understandable that complexity of tasks distributed within team members requires investigation and monitoring of the game structure as well as the player's technical, tactical and motor skills [16,20,26]. Adequately performed analysis can provide information over game requirements that can be used in order to enhance annual training plan or/and single session effectiveness.…”

“…As handball experts point out, tactfully-prepared players perform a developed action plan for the game in order to be able to win their matches. In addition, in recent years, more specific requirements for each gaming position are developed, and separate tactical attack actions differ from each other, especially for players in the first and second lines of attack [50][51][52].…”
