“…Interestingly, all associations observed between physical activity and serum markers before physical distancing were not detected 6 months following, while a positive correlation was detected to BMI and cortisol. Since cortisol is an end-product of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis associated with stress conditions in older adults ( 88 ), and it increases the search for pleasurable activities, such as the consumption of comfort foods rich in sugar and fat ( 89 , 90 ); this finding could be associated with the stress period lived by participants of the present study.…”

“…The experience of such performance failures might be comparatively frequent in our sample of older and very old adults, create stress and thereby prompt people to feel relatively older. Another important aspect might be the experience of negative affect, given the link between (momentary) affect and both cortisol and subjective age (Dutt & Wahl, 2017; Pauly et al, 2021). Since stress and negative affect have a high conceptual and empirical overlap, it might be worthwhile to disentangle the respective relations in future research.…”

“…Participants who felt more than 18.49 years older or more than 37.47 years younger than their chronological age (±3 SD ; N = 2, 1.3% of values) were excluded. Health status was assessed with the help of a comorbidity index used also in Pauly et al (2021). A sum score was computed of 13 health conditions self-reported by the participants.…”
