“…On the other hand, Hemmings et al [2008] have shown that the BDNF Val/Met variant was associated with OCD in males, with the BDNF Met allele increasing the risk of developing early-onset OCD. da Rocha et al [2010] also reported a positive association between the Met allele and OCD. In the familybased studies, findings have also been inconsistent.…”

“…Therefore, 66Val carriers have an increased euphoric effect after drug abuse, which makes them more vulnerable to have drug abuse. Previous studies found that the Met allele might be a risk allele in the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and was associated with an earlier age at onset of OCD in men (Hemmings et al, 2008;Rocha et al, 2010). These findings suggested that the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism may have genetic pleiotropy, which is the ability of a mutation in a single gene to give rise to multiple phenotypic outcomes, and, thus, simultaneously convey separate advantageous traits and disadvantageous traits in the same organism (Hong et al, 2011).…”

“…We also carried out a meta-analysis of all available published association studies of the BDNF Val-66-Met polymorphism and OCD on PubMed (until 31 December 2013), with 13 studies in total, including our current family-based and case-control studies (Hall et al, 2003;Mossner et al, 2005;Klaffke et al, 2006;Dickel et al, 2007;Wendland et al, 2007;Alonso et al, 2008;Hemmings et al, 2008;Katerberg et al, 2009;Rocha et al, 2010;Tükel et al, 2012;Márquez et al, 2013) using the Catmap package on R software (version 2.9.2, Vienna, Austria) to combine both case-control (N = 8 studies) and family (N = 5 studies) samples (Nicodemus, 2008).…”
