Possible realization of three-dimensional quantum spin liquid behavior in HoVO4

Abstract: The study of geometrically frustrated magnetic systems with unusual crystal field ground states offers a possibility of realizing the new aspects of physics of disordered systems. In this study, we report our results of structural, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity measurements, along with density functional theory calculations on HoVO4; a compound in which the presence of a distorted kind of HoO8 polyhedral leads to multiple magnetic interaction paths. The observed broad maximum below 10 K in the tempera… Show more

“…The fit using equation ( 3 The curves show a broad hump followed by an upturn at low temperatures. This kind of hump in C m (T) data has also been observed in several frustrated systems owing to the presence of short-range magnetic correlations [31,32,37]. Hence, it can be said that the observed hump in the present case is possibly due to short-range magnetic correlations.…”

“…For another member HoVO 4 , a QSL state is reported, which arises due to the dominance of frustrated geometries formed by the 2 nd and 3 rd NN Ho spins. 20 For a rare-earth-based system to exhibit low D magnetism, strong crystal field effects are required such that the ground state can be determined by S only. This motivated us to investigate another member PrVO 4 ( S = 1) as Ce and Pr lie next to each other, and in CeVO 4 , strong crystal field effects are observed.…”

“…CeVO 4 shows the evidences of strong crystal field effects which results in magnetic ground state associated with effective spin-1 2 9 . Another member HoVO 4 exhibits signatures of QSL state due to the dominance of frustrated 2nd and 3rd near neighbour Ho atoms 10 . In ErVO 4 , a field induced magnetic anomaly along with a magnetic phase ascribed to positive fifth order susceptibility is reported 11 .…”
