A regional stratigraphic framework for the Neogene succession along and across the NW European margin is presented, based on a regional seismic and sample database. The stratigraphy provides constraints on the timing and nature of the mid-to late Cenozoic differential tectonic movements that have driven major changes in sediment supply, oceanographic circulation and climate (culminating in continental glaciation). The overall context for Neogene deposition on the margin was established in the mid-Cenozoic, when rapid, km-scale differential subsidence (sagging) created the present-day deep-water basins. The Neogene is subdivided into lower (Miocenelower Pliocene) and upper (lower Pliocene-Holocene) intervals. The lower Neogene contains evidence of early to mid-Miocene compressive tectonism, including inversion anticlines and multiple unconformities that record uplift and erosion of basin margins, as well as changes in deep-water currents. These movements culminated in a major expansion of contourite drifts in the mid-Miocene, argued to reflect enhanced deep-water exchange across the Wyville-Thomson Ridge Complex, via the Faroe Conduit. The distribution and amplitude of the intra-Miocene movements are consistent with deformation and basin margin flexure in response to enhanced intra-plate compressive stresses during a local plate reorganisation (transfer of the Jan Mayen Ridge from Greenland to Europe). The upper Neogene records a seaward tilting (<1°) of the margin from the early Pliocene, in which kmscale uplift and erosion was accompanied by increased offshore subsidence, resulting in a major seaward progradation of the shelf-slope wedge as well as deep-marine erosion during a reorganisation of bottom current patterns. The large amplitude of tilting cannot be accounted for by intra-plate stress variations, but is consistent with a dynamic topographic response to upper mantle convection, in particular edge-driven flow beneath the continental margin. Sedimentary and oceanographic changes resulting from dynamic topographic responses to the evolution of upper mantle convective flow during ocean widening may be characteristic of the development of 'passive' continental margins.

[1] Rapid deposition of prograding sedimentary wedges on continental margins will cause excess pore pressure, fluid flow, and compaction as they load the substratum. They may also cause faulting and structural deformation in the sedimentary succession below and in front of the load. Large depositional units are in addition associated with pronounced isostatic subsidence. The magnitude and effects each component has on the basin as a whole is often debated. To address this problem, we use a quantitative approach with a coupled hydromechanical mathematical model based on linear isotropic elasticity. The equations are solved by the finite element method (FEM). In the modeling, a wedgeshaped load emplaced successively over a period of 1.5 Myr is used to simulate the progradation of a thick sedimentary wedge. Results show that the differential load generates excess pressure below the prograding depocenter with lateral fluid flow in front and a tail of draining pore pressure behind. The sediments are pushed downward and laterally in front of the wedge and vertical and horizontal compressional and shear stresses are generated below the wedge. The formation of the Helland Hansen Arch, located in the Vøring Basin off mid-Norway, is genetically associated with differential loading. Our results indicate that the whole eastern flank of the arch is a result of differential loading, whereas the western flank is mainly related to thermal subsidence since Paleogene times. Thus, alternative explanations like intraplate stress seem to be irrelevant as a genetic mechanism.

Circum‐Arctic mantle structure and long‐wavelength topography since the Jurassic

The circum-Arctic is one of the most tectonically complex regions of the world, shaped by a history of ocean basin opening and closure since the Early Jurassic. The region is characterized by contemporaneous large-scale Cenozoic exhumation extending from Alaska to the Atlantic, but its driving force is unknown. We show that the mantle flow associated with subducted slabs of the South Anuyi, Mongol-Okhotsk, and Panthalassa oceans have imparted long-wavelength deflection on overriding plates. We identify the Jurassic-Cretaceous South Anuyi slab under present-day Greenland in seismic tomography and numerical mantle flow models. Under North America, we propose the "Farallon" slab results from Andean-style ocean-continent convergence around~30°N and from a combination of ocean-continent and intraoceanic subduction north of 50°N. We compute circum-Arctic dynamic topography through time from subduction-driven convection models and find that slabs have imparted on average <1-16 m/Myr of dynamic subsidence across the region from at least 170 Ma to~50 Ma. With the exception of Siberia, the main phase of circum-Arctic dynamic subsidence has been followed either by slowed subsidence or by uplift of <1-6 m/Myr on average to present day. Comparing these results to geological inferences suggest that subduction-driven dynamic topography can account for rapid Middle to Late Jurassic subsidence in the Slave Craton and North Slope (respectively, <15 and 21 m/Myr, between 170 and 130 Ma) and for dynamic subsidence (<7 m/Myr, 170-50 Ma) followed by dynamic uplift (<6 m/Myr since 50 Ma) of the Barents Sea region. Combining detailed kinematic reconstructions with geodynamic modeling and key geological observations constitutes a powerful tool to investigate the origin of vertical motion in remote regions.
