Post-mortem computed tomography angiography: past, present and future

Abstract: The role of imaging has been long established in forensic practice as an adjunct to the conventional autopsy. Recently with the development of MDCT, there has been a large international push towards the development of the so called "near virtual autopsy." Currently a large obstacle to the acceptance of "near virtual autopsies" is the failure of post-mortem imaging to yield detailed information about the coronary arteries. This is a major deficiency of post-mortem MDCT and MRI compared to conventional autopsy a… Show more

“…Only a few recent studies have addressed this topic [12][13][14]. Saunders et al [13] presented the developmental stages for manual targeted in situ postmortem angiography using injections of air/Urografin Ò and demonstrated that large volumes of air and contrast can be injected without displacing the thrombi.…”

“…At the same time, some pioneer studies involving postmortem MDCTangiography and cardiac pathologies have recently been published [11][12][13] describing the potential to overcome these weaknesses. Several authors suggest that the major limitations concerning cardio-vascular pathology could be minimized by the introduction of postmortem angiography [12,14,15]. In our practice, native MDCT has become part of the routine investigation.…”

“…Following this example, researchers started using contrast media in PMCT, and PMCT-angiography (PMCTA) was introduced. 15 In recent years, the number of publications concerning PMCTA has increased significantly, signalling that research teams all over the world started to develop techniques for the injection of contrast agent into the body of the deceased and thus perform post-mortem angiography (PMA).…”

“…Postmortem angiography is becoming increasingly prominent in forensic pathology as an adjunct to conventional autopsy [1][2][3]. Despite its numerous advantages, forensic pathologists and toxicologists have questioned certain elements of this technique.…”
