“…For the purposes of this review, we defined largediameter balloon as Ն12 mm. Studies were excluded for the following reasons: editorial letter, 25 balloon dilation diameter less than 12 mm, [26][27][28][29] and preliminary reports when final results were available. 20 The following data were extracted: patient demographic characteristics, study design, largest stone size, size of endoscopic sphincterotomy, prior endoscopic sphincterotomy, balloon diameter, initial success rate, final success rate, number of sessions needed for complete biliary stones removal, need for mechanical lithotripsy, and rates of adverse events.…”

“…The approach has been modified and currently often combined with EST for extraction of large CBD stones (greater than 10 mm). The safety and efficacy of this technique were reported in case control series by Ersoz et al ., Kowalski et al . and a subsequent randomized controlled trial by Heo et al .…”

“…There is a clear need for specific studies comparing stone extraction balloons, baskets, mechanical lithotriptors, and the technique of large-diameter balloon dilation after prior sphincterotomy as a means of extracting large stones. 36,37 Further studies are also needed regarding defining the risks and benefits of mechanical lithotripsy baskets relative to alternative lithotripsy techniques. In addition, the role of endoscopic techniques for pancreatic duct stone extraction relative to the main alternative of surgical therapy requires further study with an emphasis on long-term outcomes.…”
