[Poster] Towards mobile augmented reality for the elderly

Abstract: Figure 1: We conducted a user study to evaluate the usability of handheld AR applications for the elderly (a,b). Since the results show that elderly users have difficulties holding up a tablet computer over a long period of time, we tested whether using head-mounted displays is an alternative for them (c). We also propose improved AR user interfaces for tablet PCs that do not require continuously holding up the device (d). ABSTRACTMobility and independence are key aspects for self-determined living in today's … Show more

“…Like digital games, AR is usually associated with younger user groups, and older adults are often excluded in the development of AR technology. However, AR applications have the potential to improve older adults’ social relationships, overall well-being, and quality of life and to support their independence [ 23 , 24 ]. Studies show that even though interacting with digital technology may present unique challenges to older users [ 25 ], employing new technology in games can enhance older players’ immersion and flow [ 26 ].…”

“…Since nowadays augmented reality is getting expected technology for work support, there are several researches that aim to develop support applications and to make the elderly characteristics by user interface comparison test with the elderly [8,1]. In addition, Yamamoto et al [14] developed a projection assistive system for the elderly indoor daily lives as a wearable type and confirmed the usability of a tapping interface with visual icons which are projected onto the walls by a wearable system.…”

“…Computers and tablets require constant interaction and operation, which may not be enough to provide convenience for the elderly [11] . The six-sense project shows that using AR and a set of camcorders and picoprojectors, realistic visual tracks can be added to the user's environment, which is possible to interact with users.…”
