Posterior capsulorhexis with optic capture: Maintaining a clear visual axis after pediatric cataract surgery

Abstract: We describe a technique for preventing secondary membrane formation after pediatric cataract extraction. This technique involves capture of an intraocular lens (IOL) optic through a posterior curvilinear capsulorhexis opening in an attempt to maintain a clear visual axis in children after cataract surgery. This maneuver ensures centration of the posterior chamber IOL because the haptics remain in the capsular bag and the optic is captured in the posterior capsular opening. Also, the need for an anterior vitrec… Show more

“…Primary PCCC was first reported by Castaneda et al 10 in 1992, and has now become a primary procedure in pediatric cataract surgery. [11][12][13] Moreover, surgeons are increasingly introducing this procedure in cataract surgery for adult patients, and many reports have been published with good clinical results since 2003. [14][15][16][17][18] In this study, we applied the PCCC technique for diffractive IOL Implantation.…”

“…PCCC is used frequently to prevent more severe PCO formation in children's eyes in combination with anterior vitrectomy or posterior optic capture. 12,13 However, PCCC is not a standard procedure for the surgical treatment of age-related cataracts. Despite the developments in IOL design and improvements in surgical techniques, PCO is still the most common complication of cataract surgery.…”
