Posterior polar annular choroidal dystrophy association with cystoid macular edema

Abstract: Key Clinical Message Posterior polar annular choroidal dystrophy (PPACD) is an uncommon retinal dystrophy causing nyctalopia. PPACD has been characteristically described as a foveal sparing dystrophy. We report the first case with cystoid macular edema association.

Additionally, there were intraretinal hyporeflective spaces potentially consistent with cystoid macular edema, as has been described previously, without definitive fluorescein leakage in the macula …”

“…The fovea was spared in all reported cases, except one report shows cystoid macular oedema in both eyes in case of PPACD. 6 Arcuate scotoma corresponding to chorioretinal atrophy area on Humphrey visual field was reported by coauthor in his previous report. 5 In our case also there was generalised depressed points more in the paracentral area corresponding to the area of chorioretinal atrophy (figure 3A and B).…”

“…Patients present with similar findings; however, the morphology of the atrophy seen with PPACD is oriented in a ring-like fashion around the macula, although some argue the 2 disease processes should be considered a single entity. 2,[4][5][6] In addition, the appearance of the fundus and the clinical presentation have some similarities to RP, more specifically sectoral RP. We believe that the electroretinogram findings, clinical examination, and multimodal imaging findings help exclude the diagnosis of sectoral RP.…”
