Postictal Prolactin Elevations in Rats

Abstract: Electrically induced seizures were followed by temporary elevations in serum prolactin over baseline in rats, while electrical irritation made no change. Naloxone 4 mg/kg i.p. pretreatment preserved this pattern but attenuated all levels including baseline by about 50%. While atropine 0.1 mg/kg s.c. did not change baseline levels, the prolactin levels after electrical irritation without seizure were about the same as those following a genuine seizure; atropine apparently facilitated stress-induced prolactin re… Show more

“…Prolactin is known to increase after seizures in patients and in laboratory animals,36–38 but prolactin levels in cyclic epileptic rats were not different from nonepileptic control animals (saline control group: 25.5 ± 7.5ng/ml, n = 6; pilocarpine control group: 39.5 ± 16.5ng/ml, n = 4; epileptic group: 30.0 ± 7.0ng/ml, n = 3; one‐way ANOVA, F = 0.04721; p = 0.9540). Therefore, based on serum values for prolactin that were measured in a subset of the cohort, it is unlikely that a recent seizure occurred immediately before death, which could potentially be confounding.…”

“…Esse quadro, denominado depressão pós-ictal, se caracteriza, com certas variações nos modelos, por analgesia pós-ictal, junto a perda de reflexos, como os de endireitamento 39. Além disso, achados bioquímicos mostram que nessa fase há liberação maciça de opiáceos e um pico de prolactina (PRI) 46 , que também tem sido descrito em pacientes epilépticos.…”
