Postnatal development of the rat organ of Corti

Abstract: The development of the rat organ of Corti was studied during the first postnatal weeks. The temporal and the spatial patterns of cochlear development were investigated between 4 and 24 days after birth by means of semi-thin sections at approx. ten equidistant positions along the entire cochlear duct. At all examined positions width, thickness and cross sectional area of basilar membrane, cross-sectional area of tectorial membrane, of cells of Hensen, Claudius and Boettcher and of the organ of Corti were quanti… Show more

“…It is known also that the OHCs from different regions of the cochlea develop differently. Basal OHCs reach adult-like size at PD3, whereas apical OHCs continue to grow in length up to PD16 (Roth and Volkmar, 1992;Mu et al, 1997). A similar base-to-apex pattern of development was observed in the expression of the putative OHC water channel proteins.…”

“…DPOAE measurements were only performed on rats whose auditory system was mature (Lenoir et al, 1986(Lenoir et al, , 1987Roth and Bruns, 1992;Henley et al, 1989). In addition, noise and styrene exposure were initiated beyond the critical period during which rats' ears are particularly susceptible to damage by noise (Rybalko and Syka, 2001) or ototoxic agents (Henley and Rybak, 1995).…”
