“…This may be difficult to achieve in previously irradiated patients as the extent of disease may be difficult to evaluate even with ''state of the art'' imaging studies. Although recent advances in reconstructive procedures have increased the feasibility of larger resections for recurrent HNSCCs, these procedures are associated with significant morbidity [1,6,7] and economic costs [1,8]. These issues are important in consideration of cost-effectiveness.…”

“…the frequency of complications is correlated with the clinical stage of the recurrent tumor: >20 % in stage I and II tumors, >30 % in stage III tumors and >35 % in stage IV tumors [13]. Complication rates as high as 40-53 % have been reported in the literature [14]. the key to successful salvage is appropriate patient selection with adequate preoperative measures including correction of co-morbidities, cessation of smoking and alcohol, improvement of nutritional deficits and eradication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MrSA) infection [12,15,16].…”

“…W piśmiennictwie polskojęzycznym problemem powikłań ogólnych zajmowali się Bień i wsp., Jagielska i wsp., Namysłowski i wsp., Jordan i wsp., Porównywanie częstości powikłań u poszczególnych badaczy należy traktować z dużą ostrożnością. Przyjmują oni różną definicję powikłania, a czasami w ogóle nie definiują tego zjawiska [1]. Badania przeprowadzone są na pacjentach w różnych okresach czasowych, obejmują różne grupy pacjentów, które z racji wyboru trudniejszego obszaru działania chirurgicznego, na przykład na podstawie czaszki, są bardziej narażone na wystąpienie powikłań ogólnych [35,40].…”
