“…2 After polyester grafts were introduced in the 1950s, many reports were published documenting postoperative dilatation and graft failure as a possible graft-related complication. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] As an alternative to polyester, a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft was introduced as a replacement for the abdominal aorta in the 1980s, but the experience with PTFE showed it was less flexible than polyester and was therefore difficult to implant. Expanded PTFE (ePTFE), a vascular graft with better handling characteristics and higher resistance to dilatation, became available, 19 and since 1995, we have been implementing ePTFE grafts in open repair of AAAs, which are supposed to show less dilatation compared with polyester grafts.…”
