Posture-Invariant Three Dimensional Human Hand Statistical Shape Model

Abstract: A high-fidelity digital representation of the human body is a key enabler for integrating humans in a digital twin. Among different parts of human body, building the model of the hand can be a challenging task due to the posture deviations among collected scans. In this paper, we proposed a posture invariant hand statistical shape model (SSM) based on 59 3D scans of human hands. First, the 3D scans were spatially aligned using a Möbius sphere-based algorithm. An articulated skeleton, which contains 20 bone seg… Show more

“…Guo et al [28] proposed an 0 model for establishing correspondences between deformed body shapes, and this method had higher accuracy and robustness in dynamic 3D reconstruction and tracking. However, the construction of an SSM [29] is always an expensive task regarding both the manpower and the computing time, and it is not always possible to build an SSM regarding the shape to be registered.…”

“…The design of the proposed hand scanner is modular, simple, and easy-to-build, it has been used successfully in personalized product design [25] and anthropometric studies [13] . However, there are still some limitations: 1) The scanner is designed and optimized for scanning the hand, even though other similar objects can also be scanned using this scanner, the 3D reconstruction result may not be as good as the hand; 2) The user-interface (UI) of the computer is simple, i.e.…”
