Potassium and Sodium Distribution in Cardiac Failure

Abstract: 1. Total body water, extracellular fluid, total exchangeable potassium and total exchangeable sodium were measured by the multiple isotope-dilution technique in eight patients with congestive cardiac failure. Measurements were made on each patient while in failure and then again after treatment and recovery.2. Compared with five control subjects in whom the same measurements were made, patients in failure had an excess of total body water, extracellular fluid and total exchangeable sodium, and had less total e… Show more

“…Measurements of TBW, ECF, total Nae and total Ke were made before and after the 2 weeks lithium treatment in the two depressed groups and also in the 6 control subjects who were not considered to be depressed. The measurements were made using multiple isotope dilution techniques involving radioactive tritium, sulphate, sodium and potassium irons, following the experimental procedure of Veall and Vetter (1968) and Cox et al (1971). Plasma and urine sodium and potassium levels were measured by the EEL model 150 clinical flame photometer.…”

“…In congestive cardiac failure it has been shown that potassium deficiency occurs and that following treatment with diuretics and potassium supple mentation, an increase in the total body potassium occurs [Cox et al, 1971], It has been suggested [Lant et al, 1969;Bec et al, 1969], that amiloride con serves body potassium and that treatment with 'Moduretic', a proprietary tablet of 5 mg of amiloride hydrochloride and 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide, results in an increase of body potassium [Hefferman et al, 1969].…”
