Potato leafroll virus (PLRV): its transmission and control

Abstract: and control This review provides a wide assessment of the present state of knowledge about the potato leafroll luteovirus (PLRV), a pathogen which is seriously devastating potato crops in many parts of the world. The main biological, physical and chemical properties of this virus are described. The transmission of PLRV by aphids, which are the only transmitters of this virus under natural conditions, is characterized. Special attention is given to the control of PLRV through the use of resistant potato cultiva… Show more

“…Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), family Luteoviridae, genus Polerovirus, is persistently transmitted by aphids in a nonpropagative manner and has a limited host range of approximately 20 species, mostly of the Solanaceae (Syller 1996;Taliansky et al 2003), and is a primary virus pathogen of Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s12230-016-9496-6) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users. potato.…”

“…PLRV damages of the potato crop are controlled by the use of certified seed (Radcliffe and Ragsdale 2002) and by insecticide applications (Mowry 2005). However, these techniques are not always accessible, may be also costly, in particular to small-farmers, and produce environmental and human health concerns (Paoletti and Pimentel 2000; Syller 1996; Thomas et al 1997). …”

“…Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) is one of the most significant and widespread viral pathogens of potato (Syller 1996;Barker and Waterhouse 1999). Besides reduction of total tuber yield, infection with PLRV can lead to losses in marketable yield due to the expression of net necrosis in tubers (Novy et al 2002).…”
