Aims Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) has a large phosphorus (P)-fertiliser requirement. This is thought to be due to its inability to acquire P effectively from the soil. This work tested the hypothesis that early proliferation of its root system would enhance P acquisition, accelerate canopy development, and enable greater yields. Methods Six years of field experiments characterised the relationships between (1) leaf P concentration ([P]leaf), tuber yield, and tuber P concentration ([P]tuber) among 27 Tuberosum, 35 Phureja and 4 Diploid Hybrid genotypes and (2) juvenile root vigour, P acquisition and tuber yield among eight Tuberosum genotypes selected for contrasting responses to P-fertiliser. Results Substantial genetic variation was observed in tuber yield, [P]leaf and [P]tuber. There was a strong positive relationship between tuber yields and P acquisition among genotypes, whether grown with or without P-fertiliser. Juvenile root vigour was correlated with accelerated canopy development and both greater P acquisition and tuber biomass accumulation early in the season. However, the latter relationships became weaker during the season. Conclusions Increased juvenile root vigour accelerated P acquisition and initial canopy cover and, thereby, increased tuber yields. Juvenile root vigour is a heritable trait and can be selected to improve P-fertiliser use efficiency of potato.

Stagnating potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) yields in eastern Canada have resulted in loss of competitive advantage in global potato markets. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the potential to increase yield by adopting precision agriculture technology. This study evaluated the efficiency of an apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) sensor to delineate management zones (MZs) in two commercial potato fields in New Brunswick, Canada, using an unsupervised fuzzy k-means clustering algorithm. Georeferenced soil samples from 0 to 15 cm depth were analyzed for physicochemical properties. Tuber yields were recorded using a yield monitor. The two MZs delineated using soil ECa differed significantly in soil physicochemical properties for both fields; however, tuber yield differed significantly between MZs only in Field 1. The yield difference (7.1 Mg ha−1) in Field 1 was attributed to a difference in soil moisture (23.5% vs 28.5%) resulting from a difference in clay content (141 vs 189 g kg−1). The lack of a yield difference between MZs in Field 2 may reflect relatively low within-field spatial variability. The soil ECa sensor showed promise for use in commercial potato production in New Brunswick, especially in fields with high spatial variability.

Potato is important food for half population of the world particularly population in Europe and America. Beside it is as carbohydrate source, potato can be used as main food for diabetes people, replaces the rice due to it contains low calories. In developed countries, particularly in Indonesia, it is also as diversify food for medium and highland people. The research was conducted in Selayo Tanang Buki Sileh, Lembang Jaya, Solok regency, West Sumatera, Indonesia from May to August 2017. The research aimed to study the interaction between indigenous rhizobacteria and manure to the growth and yield of red potato. The factorial design in Completely ranzomized design (CRD) with 2 factors was used in this reserach. The first factor was rhizobacteria isolates (no isolate, A2.1b2; A3.1a5; B1.2a2) and the second factor was the manure with dose 30 ton/ hectare (chicken, quail, and cattle). The potato variety that used in the assay was PING 06. The data was analyzed by analysis of variance with Honestly Significant Difference/HSD test in 5%. Generally, the result showed that there was no interaction between rhizobacteria isolates and manure to growth and yield of red potato. A2.1b2 was the best isolate for fresh weight of tuber per plant, per plot and per hectare of red potato plant and chicken manure could increase the growth and yield of red potato plant (11.73 ton/hectare).
