“…The models were developed using a procedure written in the MATLAB 7.1 R14 environment. PLSDA (Sjöström et al 1986, Sabatier et al 2003, Infantino et al 2015) is a PLS regression (SIMPLS algorithm -De Jong 1993) in which the response variable is categorical, expressing the class membership of the statistical units. The objective of PLSDA is to find a model, developed from a training set of observations of known class membership, that separates classes of objects on the basis of their Xvariables.…”

“…The partitioning of the models for M3, which include all the sampling times, was conducted optimally by choosing the Euclidean distances based on the algorithm of Kennard & Stone (1969) that selects objects without the a priori knowledge of a regression model. A summary of the relative importance of the Xvariables for both Y and X model parts is given by Variable Importance in the Projection (VIP - Taiti et al 2015, Infantino et al 2015. VIP scores estimate the importance of each variable in the PLS-based models.…”

“…PTR-ToF-MS spectra calibration was performed offline, using the peaks of known components, present in the spectra at any time (water isotope, H 3 , m/z = 59.05). All data from each replicate and background signal were normalized, according to Infantino et al [23], by the primary ion signal (cps to ncps). Data were filtered, all peaks ascribed to water chemistry or other interfering ions (e.g., oxygen and nitrogen monoxide) were removed, and subsequently, signals whose concentration was lower than 0.5 ncps were discarded.…”

“…The measured protonated mass m/z = 81.070, TI as trans-2-hexenal or terpenes fragment (Infantino et al 2015), derives from LOX cascade by splitting of linolenic acid (Angerosa et al 2004); the measured protonated mass m/z = 83.086, TI as a C6 fragment was related to the hexanal family (Park et al 2013); the measured mass m/ z = 99.080, TI as cis-3-hexenal (Taiti et al 2014), has been found in olive oils as one of the most important VOCs derived from fatty acid degradation by the LOX pathway (Angerosa et al 2004). It should be noted that the compounds maximizing the separation of the different samples belonging to the VOOs group were related to negative olfactory notes perceived in defective olive oils, and attributed to hexogen to fruits biological activity or generated by chemical oxidation.…”
